The second full moon of August 2012 will be visible in the early evening on August 31, 2012.

The “Blue Moon” is erroneously called theHarvest Moon.

The first full moon was visible in the United States on August 1, 2012.

Technically this is not the second full moon of the month. The Moon rarely appears blue. Color depends on where you are and the content of the atmosphere around the area you are. The moon is off white all the time because of its composition.

Every solar calendar has an excess of eleven days in it. Every two to three years a fourth full moon will be seen in a three month period because the calendar does not actually follow lunar time but is an imposed time frame that has to be adjusted just like the added day for Leap Year.

The “Harvest Moon” has also been used to signify the beginning of harvest season in parts of the world. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox and occurs around October 11.

The harvest of fruits and veggies may well continue into October in Alabama. Drought has made some fruit and vegetable prices rise. Recent rain from hurricane Isaac will not reduce prices much if any. Corn and other crop harvests are expected to be reduced by drought in some areas of Alabama but the drought is officially over.

Skies are predicted to be clear around Birmingham on August 31 so if you want to see the “Blue moon” go out after dark and look east. The next Blue Moon will not happen until July 2015.

As we reflect on what a beautiful summer it's been on the roof with no name, we are more than slightly sad to be leaving...even if our leave of absence is only temporary.
